The next Lovell Lecture will take place on Monday, January 29, from 1pm to 3pm in Donnison School, Church Walk off Church Street East. Speaker will be Jack Curtis with a talk entitled On Your Bike: A personal reflection of Sunderland’s Electrical Supply. Entrance is £3, which includes refreshmen­ts. A Community Cinema evening will be held at Back on the Map, Carnegie Corner, 67 Toward Road, on Thursday. Admission is £1.50, which includes refreshmen­ts. Doors open at 5.30pm with a screening at 6pm. New members are welcome and there is a membership fee of £5 each year to cover license costs. This can be paid in instalment­s if required. Sunderland Maritime Heritage hopes everyone had a lovely Christmas Break and Happy New to you all. It’s finally here, 2018, the year the Tall Ships Races will head to Wearside for a fourday maritime-themed event from Wednesday, July 11, to Saturday, July 14, which the Heritage will be a part of and its HMS Venerable model will be on display by the Glass Centre along with other activities. So in anticipati­on for this busy period, members are currently in the process of redevelopi­ng the visitor centre, which visitors to the centre asked to keep in mind over the next few weeks. The visitor Centre will be closed until mid-February but people are still welcome to visit, and if you ordered a plate for the 1/10th scale model of HMS Venerable, you can go to see the progress and see if the name of a loved one has been installed on the model’s hull. You can order a plaque via paypal, or phone 0191 510 2540, or simply pop into the centre at Unit 2, Church Street East SR1 2BB and fill in a form. Prices are £10 a plate. Voices Together has recently re-located to its new rehearsal venue at St Ignatius Church, Lightfoot Room. Fr Andrew welcomed the choir and is looking forward to the concert in church to be announced later in the year. Voices Together has entertaine­d at the Festive Cream Teas at the Marriott Hotel on Christmas Eve for the last four years and has a busy programme ahead. Maureen Hope, secretary, said: “We are on the look out for tenors and basses. Donnison School Heritage and Education Centre in Sunderland’s historic East End offers Victorian themed afternoon teas with a 20-minute talk at £10 per head, minimum bookings number of seven people. To book, ring 0191 5654835. A toddler group meets at St Cecilia’s Church hall, Ryhope Road, each Tuesday from 9.30am to 11.30am. Just go along, no need to book. Sunderland Intergener­ational Singers is connecting generation­s through song. All are welcome, just take along your voice and enjoy singing for fun and making new friends. Sunderland Antiquaria­n Archives at the Sunderland Antiquaria­n Heritage Centre, 6 Duoro Terrace, are open for research on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 9.30am to noon. Drop in sessions are held at the YMCA Centre at 2-3 Toward Road each Tuesday from 2pm to 4pm. They offer advice on the types of accommodat­ion available at the YMCA for 16 to 35-year-olds. Donnison School Heritage and Education Centre is a unique heritage attraction offering something for everyone in the heart of Old Sunderland. The school was establishe­d in 1778 for young girls through a provision made by Elizabeth Donnison in her will. Go along to meet the staff and to find out about school life in Victorian Sunderland. Open days are Wednesday and Friday. will be held in St Mary Magdalene’s Parish Centre, Wilson Street, from 10.30am to noon. On Thursday at 7.15pm, Rosary Mass and Chaplet of Divine Mercy will be held in St Mary Magdaene’s Church, Wilson Street. Sunderland Ladies’ Probus Club members are going for a lunch at The Sea Hotel on Thursday. The coach will leave St John’s Church, Ashbrooke, at 11.15am.
