Wilshere hails all-round team effort

-

Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere was thrilled to help the Gunners into the Carabao Cup final, with a 2-1 aggregate defeat of Chelsea last night.

Arsenal will now look to lift the trophy for the first time since 1993 when they take on Manchester City next month.

A delighted Wilshere said: “It was a team effort, especially second half. We knew we had to improve second half and we dug deep.

“We might have got our formation wrong in the first 20 to 25 minutes, but we came back into it and showed great character. We showed our quality going forward.

“We have got a good record at Wembley.

“We know City are a good team, but we will go there to win. We are in a good moment now and we want to keep that going.”

Goalscorer Granit Xhaka added: “It was my second goal for Arsenal inside the box. “I am happy I helped the team and we are happy. “If you play a final, you want to win the trophy.” Rangers leapfrogged Aberdeen into second spot in the Scottish Premiership, on goal difference, after beating Derek McInnes’s Dons 2-0 with goals from Alfredo Morelos and James Tavernier (penalty). Celtic, though, remain 11 points clear at the top.

Rangers boss Graeme Murty gave debuts to Jamie Murphy, Sean Goss, Russell Martin and sub Jason Cummings and said: “The movement and passing was crisp, the new players gave us a lift.”

He hopes to sign Hamilton midfielder Greg Docherty for a reported £650,000 today.

Craig Levein’s Hearts extended their club-record run of eight clean sheets with a 3-0 win at Hamilton.
