Such big ambitions at Shotton Hall
Not too long ago, if you’d visited the Academy at Shotton Hall in Peterlee you’d have found yourself in a 60s building that needed some TLC.
Fast forward seven years (and step about 50 metres to the right!) and you’ll find yourself in a remarkable new building that is an enviable place to learn.
Now very comfortable in their bright, light and colourful new home, students and staff have used the move as a catalyst for even more improvements, gaining two outstanding judgments from Ofsted and firmly establishing themselves as one of the top performing schools in County Durham.
It’s a busy place, with big ambitions for themselves and most importantly their children.
But as that saying goes, if you want something done ask busy people, which seems to be the case at the Academy where this year 74% of students passed at the new grades 9-4 (broadly equivalent to A*-C grades) in English and maths, with 88% passing English which includes an impressive 16 grade 9s – the top new grade achievable.
More recently The Academy has broadened its remit and taken on a range of new responsibilities including becoming a ‘National Teaching School’ and provider of training for new teachers entering the profession.
They have also been recently announced as one of 23 Research Schools across England; the only one of its kind in the North East.
Continuing their regional role, the Academy also founded the North East Learning Trust to help raise standards and outcomes for more children in schools across the North East.
