At a recent Northern Karate Associatio­n competitio­n, several students from Rickleton who attend classes with their instructor Sharon, won trophies. The club train every Tuesday 5.15pm to 6.15pm at Rickleton Gethsemane Revival Centre, Rickleton Chapel. New starters are welcome and can just go along to a session to see if they like it or call Dave on 07413 630303.

Active Sunderland has announced its BIG EVENT Community festivals will return in August 2018. These events give people of all ages the opportunit­y to join in and try new sporting activities. Washington’s event will take place on the August 1 at Princess Anne Park . Further informatio­n on the Active Sunderland website.

Three workshops are being held in Washington Town Centre Library on the February 21 and the 24. Both will allow participan­ts to contribute to an exciting new interactiv­e street art trail by Frank Styles. On the 21st, from 4.30pm to 6.30pm, there is a free writing workshop with James Whitman. February 24 is a free illustrati­on workshop with Thomas Boyle from 1.30pm to 3.30pm. Each is suitable for ages 11 plus to adults, booking is not essential just turn up on the day. The third session is on February 14, a special free session for children aged nine to 11 called ‘A Seat At The King’s Throne’. The Crafty Cow based in the Arts Centre is hosting a session on February 20 from 4pm to 5.30pm in conjunctio­n with Durham Wildlife Trust. This is a free session where families can create their own bird and bat houses to take home. Booking

Councillor­s representi­ng Washington North wards have set up a Facebook page Washington North BLP which will keep residents up to date with informatio­n on what the councillor­s are doing in the area and details of events they are taking part in. Currently they are working with residents to form a new group for Usworth Park Concord. The purpose would be to regain it’s green flag status and to make it a venue for families to spend time together. Arts Centre Washington has a Youth Art Exhibition running until March 24 with exhibits from young artists throughout the Sunderland area.There were two age groups, 11 to 14 and 15 to 20. Five winners were chosen from the younger group, oneofwhich­wasKyraSid­hu, from St Robert’s of Newminster

School. In the older age group there were six winners chosen and two were from Washington, Amy Usher and Joseph Ridley, both again students at St Robert’s of Newminster School. Each winner will be recognised at the Young Achievers Award Ceremony at the Stadium Of Light.

Saturday at Arts Centre, 11am and 2pm, is ‘The Nose That Nobody Picked’, adapted from the book by David Parkin. Music, magic and fun for children aged five-plus. Tickets £7. A free workshop is also available for ticket holders from 12.45pm to 1.45pm for children aged five to 11. The workshop, with David Parkin, will look at fun ways to create movement and songs /poetry around the theme of spring. Spaces are limited and should be booked by calling 0191 561 3455. On February 23 there is a double bill of films for fans of the outdoors, Citadel and The Last Great Climb. Citadel looks at the peak dubbed the ‘Mountain God’, a stunning 3,000m summit in one of the remaining untouched corners of the great Alaskan

range. The last great climb follows Lee Houlding and his team on their first ascent of the north east ridge of the Ulvstana peak, 2931m. A technicall­y challengin­g climb in one of the world’s harshest environmen­ts. Tickets, £10, commencing 7.30pm. On February 24, it is Pulse, which celebrates the best in youth dance from across the region. It gives local dance groups the platform to perform and be inspired by others.

Half-term at Washington Wetlands sees the ‘Daily Dusty’s Puddle Jumping Challenge’. See if you can record the fastest time aroundawel­lybootcamp­obstacleco­urse,orbeprepar­ed to get wet as you try to make the biggest splash measured by the splash-o-meter. Open to all ages and abilities and included as part of the normal admission price.
