Raising the curtain on an out of this world arts season

-

From tap dance spectaculars to outlaw vicars and an alien invasion, the new season at Arts Centre Washington promises to be out of this world.

Highlights of the theatre programme include:

War of the Worlds – The critically-acclaimed Pantaloons invade the stage in this funny yet faithful new adaptation as they use musical instruments, puppetry and enthusiasm to recreate deadly heatrays, giant fighting-machines, squidgy tentacled Martians and interplanetary warfare on an epic scale.

Austen’s Women – Thirteen of Jane Austen’s heroines come to life in this bold revisiting of some of literature’s most celebrated works. In this muchloved Edinburgh sell-out hit, using only Austen’s words, Rebecca Vaughan becomes Emma Woodhouse, Lizzy Bennet, Mrs Norris, Miss Bates and nine other beautifully observed women in critical moments from Austen’s major novels.

Fall Out – The latest show from contemporary tap company Old Kent Road combines jazz movement and highly accomplished tap dance. Led by a live band the show takes us on a journey of what it’s like to fall out of love.

As ever the centre has a programme of theatre for children and families, such as:

The Nose That Nobody Picked – A rip snorting musical for all the family adapted for stage from the award-winning book by David Parkin. Suitable for ages five-plus and families, this is the unlikely story of a boy who finds a living nose living in his garden.

Live music is also in plentiful supply with Rob Herron and the Tea Pad Orchestra who play their own unique brand of Western Swing, Blues, Gypsy Jazz and Country, or ‘North Eastern Swing’ as they’ve coined it, as well as a host of top acts at The Davy Lamp Folk Club.

Fans of stand-up comedy can look forward to Jonny & the Baptists, Teesside comedian Patrick Monahan, who will be rewinding back to the 1990s, and hilarious Northern Irish comedian and parttime mountain climber Martin Mor.
