A new chapter has begun at a Sunderland school with the opening of its refurbished library.

Children at Castletown Primary School were delighted to welcome the Mayor of Sunderland, Coun Doris MacKnight, toperformtheofficialopening.

Thanks to a substantial donation from The Sir Tom Cowie Charitable Trust, the school, in Barrons Quay Road, has been able to completely restock its library, linking all the books to a new reading programme that can be accessed by children across the school.

School staff, parents and children have also painted and decorated the library, transforming it into magical spaces linked to themes such as ‘Under the Sea,’ ‘Fairytale Magic’ and ‘Space and Beyond.’

Headteacher Mrs Joan Lumsdon said: “We are incredibly grateful to the Sir Tom Cowie Trust for giving us this amazing opportunity to provide such a wide range of reading material for our children.

“In a very short space of time the new materials have inspired and motivated children to want to read.

“We hope this continues and builds a life-long love of reading in all our children.”

Teacher Kate Longford added: “In a very short space of time the new library has had a huge impact on children’s enthusiasm towards reading. We are already seeing a difference in attitude which we hope will continue.”
