‘BEASTLY’ WEATHER HITS HOME ... AND THERE’S MORE TO COME

Sunderland is braced for more snow and ice as the Beast from the East returns.

The predicted widespread travel chaos did not quite materialise yesterday, though police advised motorists to avoid the A19 first thing due to the poor weather conditions.

It left one lane partially blocked between the A1231 and A183.

But readers took time out to enjoy the white stuff and bombarded our Facebook page with pictures of the winter weather.

Northumbria Police tweeted: “Our advice to all motorists at the minute is to avoid the A19 completely in the Sunderland/South Tyneside areas due to the conditions on the road.

Sunderland City Council Portfolio Holder for City Services, Coun Michael Mordey, said: “During periods of severe wintry weather the council runs a 24-hour treatment programme for our main commuter, logistic and public transport routes, such as the A690 and A1231, and that’s exactly what has been happening.

“The council’s aim is to keep all major routes treated and clear, drivers can always help by giving gritters priority and letting them through traffic. Secondary and nonpriority routes have also had treatments and staff have been diverted to snow and ice clearing duties in shopping centres and other busy areas.

“While we have this wintry spell, wrap up warm, take care on the roads and pavements, and be neighbourly.”

The Met Office has extended its weather warning to the weekend.

Amber warnings for heavy snow are in place until Friday, with a yellow warning for Saturday.
