Authority comes clean on plan to target the fly-tippers
The need to clean up Sunderland’s streets was high on the agenda as councillors agreed the budget for the next financial year.
The authority will spend an £1.5million, alongside £500,000 invested last year, to support environmental services such as street cleaning, and prosecuting litter bugs and fly-tippers.
And Coun Michael Mordey, Portfolio Holder for City Services, told yesterday’s meeting which approved the spending plans, that the council was looking to get tough on litrerbugs.
“Cabinet, at its meeting at the end of the month, will consider a report that will increase the fine for littering to £150,” he said.
“And we are currently working on proposals that will be brought forward in April that will disrupt even further the activities of flytippers in Sunderland. The budget also sees: More than £5million for supporting Children’s Services in the city and an extra £8million for adult social care, £1.79million of which will come from a preceltt levied as part of the city’s Council Tax;
A one-off investment of £2million to support this year’s Tall Ships Event in July;
An additional £60million of one-off capital investments in highways, plant and equipment, school buildings and other infrastructure.
Newly-appointed leader Coun Harry Trueman said: “It’s essential we continue to invest in our infrastructure and economic regeneration. This is vital if we are to deliver more and better jobs and economic growth.”
