40 new jobs in store as Lidl gets green light for store

A new Lidl supermarke­t is set to be built on The Peel Retail Park, in Washington, after Sunderland City Council planning officers granted permission.

Work is due to start on site within months, with a view to opening the store next summer. Up to 40 new jobs are set to be created.

Lidl UK’s regional head of property, David Murphy, said: “We could not be more delighted to have received planning permission, and look forward to seeing constructi­on commence. I’d like to take this opportunit­y to thank the local community for their continued support.”

Roger Wheeldon, director of retail developmen­t at Peel Land and Property, which owns and manages the Retail Park, said: “The opening of Lidl in 2019 is set to further increase footfall to the Retail Park, driving repeat visits from a loyal audience.”
