Winner: Joshua Waddell
Fifteen-year-old Joshua used his award win to emphasise the importance of sponsorship in achieving his goals.
The sports star has cerebral palsy and is unable to walk unaided but hasn’t let it hold him back to become one of the best there is at wheelchair fencing.
For the last three years he has represented England in the School Games, winning silver and bronze medals, as well as bronze in the Under 17 World Championships in Poland.
Joshua also plays wheelchair rugby for Darlington Mowden Park Bulls.
After scooping the award he said: “I was not expecting it.
“It is the first time I have been nominated for an award and it is nice to be recognised but I don’t mind not getting the fame if I can get some sponsorship, because I need it to achieve great things in the sport.”
Also shortlisted: Luke Robinson, Scott Baker.
