Carol dedicated her award to the people who are trying to tackle the problem of litter in their communitie­s.

The committed volunteer has been tackling the ongoing problem of litter in the region for 15 years.

In April 2014 she set up the Tidyfatfie­ld Litter Group which sees around 10 members and local councillor­s look after their own areas as well as taking part in a monthly litter pick.

Carol is also a member of the Keep Washington Tidy group and has joined forces with The Rotary Club of Washington, which set up the Rotakids scheme and involved pupils from Usworth Colliery Primary School in litter picks.

Receiving up her award she said: “I am honoured to win the award.

“I want it to highlight the problem of litter and to show that there are people out there trying to tackle it.”
