niside Methodist Ladies’ Fellowship was Anne Riding, from Hetton, on the life of popular actress and entertainer Dora Bryan, including reading passages from her book Tapestry Tales.
At the Rotary Club, member Ray Smith, pictured right, gave an illustrated talk to his colleagues about the history of Oman and its progress from poverty to an oil rich state where, in his younger days, he worked as an engineer on some of the developments.
At the March meeting of Gilpin WI, members were entertained by the musical trio In Accord. Their programme included songs and comedy and was well received, especially as all proceeds from the performances will go to the British Heart Foundation.In recent weeks many members have had great fun taking part in a fitness class geared to varying abilities. Any other members wishing to join can get information from any committee member.Next month’s meeting marks Gilpin WI’s birthday and the Federation’s 40th anniversary. It will be a very special celebration and all members are asked to add to the party atmosphere by wearing something red. Entertainment will be from the musical group Harbour Lights. The meeting will start at the usual time of 1.30pm at Kepier Hall on Thursday, April 5.
Shiney Row, St Oswald’s Church and Community hall has been given a funding boost of £6,716 from Suez Communities Trust to help replace the hall heating system. Funding will allow the replacement of the current gas fired, cast iron radiators with an air to air heat pump system. The Rev. Steve Osman is sure that this will be a more efficient and effective heating system. Marek Gordon, Chairman of Suez Communities Trust, said: “Suez Communities Trusts Provides funding awards through the Landfill Communities Fund. This impor- tant source of funding has been available since 1997 and has provided projects with more than £1.4billion. We were delighted to be able to offer funding to Shiney Row, St Oswald’s Church and Community hall”. St Oswald’s Community Hall is available for hire for groups and special occasions.
Penshaw Community Association is offering access to computers and internet to the local community. You will also be able to access Universal Job Match and do online job searches. The computer suite will be open to the public, a couple of days a week for four hours on request, with technical support available one hour per session to assist with any inquiries or support in IT skills on Tuesdays from 9am to 11am and on Fridays from 9am to 11am.
