Coleman’s rallying call to

- By Richard Ord

Chris Coleman has wrung the most out of his players.

He’s tried every formation on the pitch, just about every player at his disposal has been given a run out and we’re sure he’s pushed them on the training ground to achieve their peak physical fitness.

All that’s left is to get into their heads.

His words today sound like the last throw of the dice to wring even more from the team.

This week the players took time out from training to go into the community and visited the Caterpillar plant in Peterlee.

It was a goodwill visit that not only helps foster a good spirit in the team, with the fans and local business, but also helps give the players some perspective on life. The players mustn’t crumble under the pressure of this relegation dogfight but embrace it.

The message he was trying to convey was simple. As dismal and disappointing as this season has been so far, they are still the luckiest men on Wearside and can turn things around.

He said: “Even us, bottom of the league, looking for a new owner, it is a lot of negativity but we’re still lucky.”

Coleman, the player, realised this and relished every moment and is urging his players to do the same. He points to skipper John O’Shea as a shining example of success.

“Can you look back when you’re done, on a career you were lucky to have, and say you made the most of it? John O’Shea, he can.

“When he hangs his boots up he can look back and say he’s squeezed every last drop out of it. He’ll have no regrets.”

It’s a rallying call to his players to truly give their all in the relegation run in.

We trust they’ll heed his message. There must be no regrets.
