Warning put in place for city seafront
Safety experts issued a flood warning for Sunderland’s Roker seafront yesterday following heavy rainfall.
Volunteers from the city’s RNLI group warned that people should stay away from the area ahead of last night’s high tide just before 6pm.
Experts said the wind and waves were likely to cause flooding at the beauty spot.
It didn’t stop some hardy souls still taking to the area yesterday to walk their dogs.
Sunderland RNLI posted a message on Facebook yesterday saying: “A flood warning has been issued for this afternoon’s high tide at Roker Seafront.
“Wind and wave conditions combined with the high tide are likely to cause flooding from wave overtopping throughout the period between 5pm and 6.30pm with the tides forecast to be higher than usual.
“We would like to ask people to stay away from risk areas and take care next to the coast.”
Forecasters had said there was a good chance snow could fall in the North East during yesterday.
The Met Office put a yellow warning for snow in place, with the organisation saying that heavy snow was expected over parts of northern England, especially for high ground.
Yesterday morning saw heavy rainfall, with many local football fixtures can- celled.
There was also the chance of travel delays on roads with some stranded vehicles and passengers, along with delayed or cancelled rail and air travel and a small chance that some rural communities could become cut off. The possibility of power cuts occurring were predicted and other services, such as mobile phone coverage, were thought to be affected by the weather.
The warning was scheduled to be in place until today.
