The Internatio­nal Community Organisati­on of Sunderland (ICOS) organised another successful event for schoolchil­dren when thirtyfour Year 4 pupils from Grangetown Primary School, (pictured), once again went along to Backhouse Park. ICOS involved local artist Anna Glover worked with the pupils on art and craft, while they were also able to learn more about recycling and upcycling. Healthy snacks were provided for all their hard work. A meeting of committee members of the Sunderland Men’s Probus Club, to review the life of the club, will be held in Ashbrooke Sport’s Pavilion, West Lawn, at 9.30am on Tuesday, April 10. It will be followed by a talk to club members by John Gibson, from Durham City, on the Charge of the Light Brigade. Visitors are welcome. Sunderland Floral Art Club will hold its next meeting on Tuesday, April 17, at St Cecilia’s RC Church hall, at 2pm. There will be a flower demonstrat­ion, their first, by Angela Walsh, Sue Elsdon, Jessica Langley and Allan Raby, four students currently studying with Rebecca Hough at Peterlee College. Thornholme Residents’ Associatio­n will be holding a quiz and fund-raising evening in the Ditchburn Suite, Ashbrooke Sports Club, on Saturday, April 14, from 6pm to 9pm. All funds raised will be re-invested in activities to maintain and develop the areas covered by the associatio­n in St Michael’s and Millfield. Tickets cost £7, which includes hot food, while the quiz is £10 per team, maximum of four people. There will be cash prizes, a champagne raffle and football cards. Local Explorer Scout Myles Robertson, from St John’s Church, Ashbrooke Scout Group, is raising funds to attend the World Jamboree in the Netherland­s this July. The Rotary Club of Sunderland has made a donation towards his expenses. A pupil from the Barbara Priestman Academy in Meadowside will be sponsored by the Sunderland Club to take part in the Tall Ships Race from Sunderland to Esbjerg. Meanwhile the club has donated to the Rotary North East Games for People with Disabiliti­es and to the Mayor of Sunderland’s three nominated charities; Alzheimer’s Associatio­n Sunderland, the Phoenix Unit at Sunderland Royal Hospital and Castletown Scout Group. If you would like to join the dedicated team of fundraiser­s and have a good social life, go along any Thursday at 12. 30pm to the Rosedene Hotel Sunderland Conservati­ve Women’s Organisati­on is to hold its Spring Fair on Saturday, April 21, from 10am to noon, at St Cecilia’s RC Church hall, Ryhope Road, next to Southmoor School. Admission is £2 with children free and includes coffee and biscuits. There will be a door prize of £25 and also a raffle with plenty of prizes, the first being £50. There will be many stalls including cakes, books bric-a-brac, greetings cards, costume jewellery and handicraft­s. Everyone welcome. Healthy Eating sessions are held every Monday during term-time. Go along and enjoys new recipes. The session runs from 10.15am in The salvation Army. Cost is £1 and everyone is welcome. Every Monday a healthy walk leaves the Salvation Army at 11am. Everyone is welcome. The Salvation Army’s The Daily Bread Café is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 1.30pm. Mondays enjoy freshly cooked pies, Fridays a full English breakfast for £2.50. There’s lots’ going on in the centre including: Monday to Friday, term-time, breakfast club from 8am; Crafts: Monday, sugar craft 10am to noon, Tuesday, Crafty 49ers (various crafts ), Wednesdays, Art (painting), Thursdays general crafts, 10am to noon. The Cameo Club meets every Wednesday from 1pm to 2pm at Austin House and it is a chance to meet new friends and there is lotto, quizzes, refreshmen­ts, bible thought and much more.
