It’s time to crush the litter louts

- By Richard Ord

A new weapon is set to be introduced in the war against litter on the streets of Wearside ... and we trust it will crush the opposition.

Sunderland City Council’s decision-making Cabinet meets next week to consider new powers to seize and destroy vehicles which have been used for fly-tipping.

Since we launched our Clean Streets campaign, we have been heartened by the pro-active approach from the public and the council to the litter problems blighting out community.

While it will be the Cabinet making the call, it is sure to get cross-party approval.

There have been differences in how the city council should approach the rubbish issues in our area from the various opposition parties, but all want to see the streets cleaned up.

Where they do agree is on tougher penalties for offenders and more avenues of opportunity for the public to play a part in shopping litter louts.

We have already seen an upsurge in public involvement. Recent cases have seen offenders brought to justice thanks to the vigilance of the public.

They spot offenders and are quick to report the evidence to the authorities.

The authorities have, to their credit, been swift to respond. Hefty fines have been dished out to those caught flouting the bylaws.

This new power to seize and then crush any vehicle used in the improper disposal of waste in our community must be welcomed.

Too many individuals have been using their own cars and vans to dump rubbish in our community, and charging people for the privilege.

The prospect of a hefty fine and their car returned squashed to the size of a small suitcase, ought to make them think twice.
