Saints boss: We need wins now

-

Southampton boss Mark Hughes knows his team must throw caution to the wind in their remaining games if they are to stay in the Premier League.

Saints halted their four-game losing run last night, but a goalless draw at Leicester did little for their survival hopes.

Saints are still four points adrift, with four games to go.

“We will have to wait until the rest of the season to see if that’s a significant point one way or the other,” said Hughes (pictured).

“But given the fact we haven’t been able to pick up any points in recent weeks, clearly it is a positive and we must take it as a positive.

“The importance of taking something out of the game shouldn’t be underestimated, I don’t think. But we are going to get to a point where we are just going to have to throw everything at it.

“We are going to have to get maximum points. We are going to have to take more risks in the games coming up and that’s where we find ourselves, unfortunately.”

Antonio Conte singled out Alvaro Morata for praise after Chelsea’s 2-1 victory at Burnley, despite the striker missing a golden chance and reacting angrily following his substitution.

Morata, who has only scored one Premier League goal since December, looked set to double the lead given to Chelsea by a Kevin Long own goal when he ran through on Nick Pope’s goal 10 minutes after half-time only to place his shot wide.

Burnley subsequently equalised when Ashley Barnes inadvertently deflected in Johann Berg Gudmundsson’s shot but Victor Moses earned Chelsea victory, which sees them close to within five points of fourth-placed Tottenham.

Conte made six changes ahead of Sunday’s FA Cup semi-final against Southampton, and he said: “I saw a great team spirit. Giroud and Morata played a fantastic game with a great sacrifice without the ball.”
