Wheatley a point from second title

Wheatley Hill WMC need just a point to retain their title.

Wednesday’s hardfought 2-1 win over Hall Farm Glasshus kept them nine points above West Auckland Tunns, who have three games to play, including a potential decider at Wheatley Hill on May 5.

Ash Griffiths hit both goals for Wheatley, who only have one match left, with Martin Hope replying.

West Auckland Tunns proved too strong for hosts Seaton United, cruising to a 6-2 victory.

Wayne Whitfield weighed in with a clinical hat-trick to inspire Tunns, backed by Michael Donohoe’s brace and an effort from sub Liam Blighe, with Luke McGill starring.

In midweek, Tunns enjoyed a four-goal salvo from Whitfield as they beat Farringdon Detached 4-1.

Horden Community Welfare concluded their league campaign with a 13th win in 16 matches, 6-2 at Durham City Reserves.

Prolific marksman Peter Crawford had a day to savour, notching five of Horden’s six goals in a memorable man-of-thematch performance.

Liam Appleby also notched as Horden finished off on 36 points, with their three-point deduction proving costly.

Horden progressed to the Washington Aged Peoples Trophy semi-finals in midweek, edging out Hylton Sports Club 7-6 on penalties after a 1-1 draw.

Last midweek, Hall Farm Glasshus fought well to secure a 3-2 win at Durham City Reserves, with star man Callum Hodgson firing a brilliant treble.
