The Friends of Houghton Parish Church Trust continue the celebratio­ns of their 25th anniversar­y in St Michael and All Angels’ Church at 7.30pm on Monday, May 7, with the musical Life In A Pit Village about typical life when the mines were thriving. The Rotary Club held its annual St George’s Day dinner in the Chilton Country Hotel, with a good attendance of members, family, friends and visitors from neighbouri­ng Rotary Clubs for an excellent traditiona­l meal. Entertainm­ent, with suitable music for the occasion, was provided by Houghton Brass Band, and a hilarious sketch Waiting for George, performed by members Graham McGrath and Geoff Pratt. At Houghton Older People’s Enterprise in the Methodists Church hall at 1pm on Thursday, entertainm­ent will be provided by singer Rob Dennie, who also tells funny stories. The next surgery by Shiney Row councillor­s, Anne Lawson, Mel Speding and Geoff Walker, is in Trinity Methodists Church hall from 10am to 11am on Saturday. The next walks by the Sunderland Group of the Ramblers’ Associatio­n are: Sunday, Waskerley Station Circular (about 7.25 miles) via three reservoirs, meeting at Waskerley Station at 10.30am.
