Cats give Wolves a mauling

- By Richard Ord

Sunderland’s new wannabe supremo Stewart Donald must be wondering what all the fuss is about.

Rumours of Sunderland’s calamitous fall from grace must surely be exaggerated.

Rather than turning up for his first game at the Stadium of Light to oversee another shambolic home defeat, the new man must have sat in awe as the Black Cats young guns gave the champions a right mauling.

The fans at the Stadium of Light have an expression for that performance, “Blinking typical Sunderland.”

When you need them to pull out a win against fellow relegation strugglers, they fold easier than a rubber deck chair. When you expect them to roll over against the big guns, they go and turn over one of the strongest Championship sides in recent years.

Typical of Sunderland that they do it when it doesn’t matter. Locking the stable door after the horse has bolted is a skill honed by SAFC in recent years.

But, even though the result was academic (Wolves would be champions, Sunderland chumps no matter what the score) Mr Donald was at least able to see some potential. To end such a grim season on a surprising high, has buoyed many fans.

There had been repeated calls to blood the youngsters as the season began to fade and the Wolves’ performance has vindicated that call.

Luke Molyneux, Denver Hume and Bali Mumba made their debuts and along with some notable others in the Black Cats line up gave the Sunderland faithful something to sing about.

Here’s hoping this wasn’t a flash in the pan, but a promise of greater things to come. Over to you Mr Donald.
