BOWLS: LAST SEASON’S RUNNERS-UP GAIN REVENGE OVER SEAHAM TOWN

With the Storey Bowl leaders Roker Park on a bye this left the door open for new leaders as round four of fixtures were completed.

Last season, Hetton Workmen’s missed out on a fourth consecutiv­e title by half a point by Seaham Town, however they gained a little bit of revenge last weekend as they inflicted a 87-49 (7-0) home defeat on the holders to go top of the table.

Houghton Town moved into third with a 83-63 (5-2) win at Thompson Park while Hylton Colliery Welfare got back to winning ways beating Pennywell 69-51 (6½-½). Round five takes place today with leaders Hetton hosting Hylton Colliery, Houghton Town host Seaham Town and Wearmouth head to Roker Park.

Earl Cup holders Silksworth came away from Hetton Workmen with a 7-0 win and Barnes West End defeated Seaham Town 96-46½ (7-0), Houghton Dairy Lane suffered their first loss of the season going down 75-64 (6-1) at Barnes Park,

Roker Marine had a good 81-47 (6-1) win at Hylton Colliery and there was an away win for Usworth 71-60 (5-2) at Houghton Town.

Second division leaders Grindon Mill eased to 77-52 (7-0) win at Sunderland while Thompson Park made it four out four with a 71-61 (6-1) win over Whitburn. North Biddick moved into third with a 75-57¾ (5-2) win over Washington and there was a smashing away win for South Hylton 67-56½ (6-1) at Roker Park, Pemberton’s search for a win goes on after a 67-44 (6-1) loss at Ryhope.

Both unbeaten records in the Swan Cup remained intact after week four of fixtures. Holders Dairy Lane defeated North Biddick 93-47 (7-0) and Silksworth worked hard for a 60-57 (6-1) win over Barnes West End.

South Hylton moved into third with a 75-65 (5-2) win over Barnes Park while Roker Marine moved off the bottom of the table with an 80-60 (7-0) home win over Seaham Town.

With the Division Two leaders Grindon Mill losing 89-44 (6-1) at Usworth that left the door open for Washington

to go top with a 88-47 (7-0) win at Hylton Colliery, Thompson Park hit winless Pemberton for a ton 113-25¾ (7-0)

In the Harold Howey Barnes Park B are still unbeaten at the top following a 43-21 (4-0) win over Ryhope B, Silksworth’s 38-24 (4-0) win at Ryhope A shunts them into second place, Houghton Dairy Lane B notched a third win on the trot 32-26 (3½-½) at Roker Park while early leaders Roker Marine A bounced back with a 39-22 (4-0) win over Whitburn.

There was a first win for Hylton Colliery A 34-32 (3-1) over winless South Hylton. In the second division leaders Chester le Street defeated Pemberton A 41-15¾ (4-0), Roker Marine B had a good win at New Herrington 33-26 (4-0) while Pennywell moved into fourth with a 42-26 (4-0) win over Thompson Park.

The Grindon league got underway last week. With holders Silksworth already committed to a couple of double fours, their game against Grindon Mill was cancelled,

Barnes West End made a winning start 77-24 (5-0) at home against South Hylton and Usworth also won at home defeating Ryhope 6735¾ (5-0), New Herrington’s first venture into the Grindon

league ended in defeat as Whitburn ran out 55-41 (½4½), no result was received from the remaining game between Hylton Colliery and Dairy Lane.

There has been more action in area two’s county competitio­ns this week as the triples got underway. It was a good night for Houghton Dairy Lane as all four of their hopes made progress. Joe Sutherland defeated Silksworth’s Neal Ridley 24-19 and James McKinney defeated another Silksworth trio Paul Baker 21-14.

David Armstrong held on to a thrilling 16-15 home win over Barnes Park’s Albie Hill while Ian Whorlton completed the quartet of wins with a 24-14 victory at Sunderland against Dennis New.

Last year’s beaten county finalist, Silksworth’s Josh Halcrow, claimed a last end 13-12 win over Marine’s Richie Mckie and Billy Ferry came out on top in an all Silksworth affair 21-8 against Peter Brickle.

On Tuesday night, the next round of the singles take place with the pick of the ties being the all Silksworth affair between Josh Halcrow and David Bolt.

A couple of ties have already been played, Silksworth’s Gary Farquhar beat

Hylton’s Bob Craggs 21-4 and Jimmy Richardson won another all Silksworth affair against Scot Baker 21-4.

On Thursday night the next round of the pairs takes place with an all Barnes West End local derby as Bryan Sanderson takes on Gary Wallace.

The White Rose is Bowls England’s County U25 double fours competitio­n, and in last weekend’s opening round the Durham young guns recorded a tremendous 55-34 at Gosforth against Northumber­land to progress to the regional day at Kirbymoors­ide in June.

Silksworth’s Josh Halcrow steered Jack Deverson (Silksworth), Liam Berry (Darlington South Park) and Sam Patterson (Hetton Workmen’s) to a creditable 21-21 draw.

However all the damage was done on the other rink. Jordan Harston (Hundens), Matty Gleeson (Spennymoor), Keith Burton (Darlington RA) and Bryan Henderson (Hartlepool Old Boys) were in rampant form as they beat former U25 internatio­nal Josh Minto 33-12.

A special mention to South Park’s Liam Berry, who at 13 years old becomes the youngest player to have represente­d

Bowls Durham at any level.

In the Bowls England club double fours Roker Marine had a cracking 40-32 win at Silksworth B and will head to Dairy Lane A on Monday, who in turn defeated Barnes Park A 47-31. The Dairy Lane B squad were beaten 43-23 by Dipton while the Silksworth A team received a walk over off Leadgate and travel to Dunston next.

In the senior singles, Barnes Park’s Les Taylor’s impressive form continued with a 21-20 win over Dunston’s Mal Johnston, there were a couple of local exits in the senior pairs – Dairy Lane’s James McKinney narrowly lost 17-16 to Pelton Fell’s Jim Hutchinson and Barnes West End’s Bryan Sanderson went down 21-19 to Vane Tempest’s John Webster.

In the family pairs, Marine’s Patrick & Peter Thomson were beaten 20-18 at Darlington RA by the Macey’s.

In the Mixed Pair’s Dairy Lane’s Jeff Wilson had a cracking 23-8 win over Owton Lodge’s Carmel Guy and will head to Stockton next to face Andrew Parnell. In the Mixed fours Dairy Lane’s James McKinney moved into the next round with a 26-14 win over Spennymoor’s Barry Attwood.
