Wearside shows true colours

- By Richard Ord

On a weekend where Liverpool goalkeeper Loris Karius wanted the world to swallow him up after a calamitous night in Kiev, how heartwarming it was to see a lad from Sunderland come to his rescue.

Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson went straight on air after the club’s devastating Champions League loss to show solidarity with the young keeper and share the blame.

We should not be surprised.

Just take a look through today’s paper and you’ll get a feeling for what we already know ... Wearsiders are all heart.

Charity champ Jim Thompson epitomises the lengths Wearsiders will go to help others as he embarks on a 1,300 mile walk to raise money for research into Multiple Sclerosis. And he’d doing to mark his 60th birthday!

We also feature a story on city teachers travelling to Nepal, giving up their holidays to provide teaching to pupils in Kathmandu.

That generosity of time and effort is greatly appreciated. So to is the generosity of those in our community who have helped raise more than £35,000 to help bring home Daniel Sirrell who died while on a trip to Amsterdam.

The death of dad Alex Slark is another tragedy that has devastated a family, but brought out the best in people.

The family of the Nissan worker have been overwhelmed by the generosity and kind words from the community.

There are those who will continually put down our community, but they are thankfully in the minority.

The majority of Wearsiders are generous in spirit and deed, just like Jordan Henderson, and sometimes we need reminding of that.

Well done Wearside.
