Residents treated to cinema show

-

A group of residents from a Peterlee care home enjoyed a dementia friendly screening of a blockbuster movie at a local cinema.

Five residents were treated to a screening of The Greatest Showman at Cineworld, Dalton Park.

To mark the recent Dementia Action Week, Cineworld teamed up with the Alzheimer’s Society to plan the free event, which is part of a long-term aim of developing a Dementia friendly community.

Staff from Cineworld and volunteers from the Alzheimer’s Society were on hand to offer support and assistance once inside the cinema.

After the residents were seated, Julie McClurey, wellbeing co-ordinator at Grampian Court, went back into the foyer to get the group their refreshments.

They were given a soft drink, some popcorn and some jelly babies to enjoy whilst the film was on.

A spokesperson said the group enjoyed the story of PT Burnham and couldn’t keep their hands and feet still when the music started.

Resident Elvin Hewitson said: “It was great to be able to visit the cinema again, after such a long time.”

Grampian Court home manager Judith Tully said: “This was the first time that residents from Grampian Court have had the opportunity to attend an event hosted by the Alzheimer’s Society and it is great how Cineworld has helped to make this a dementia friendly event.”

The HC-One operated home is celebrating achieving a 9.9 average rating on the sector’s leading care home comparison website carehome.co.uk
