HOW ENGLAND RATED IN WIN OVER NIGERIA

-

Jordan Pickford: The former Sunderland goalkeeper maintained his concentration despite rarely being tested and could do little about Nigeria’s goal. 6/10.

Kieran Trippier: Picked out Gary Cahill with an impressive delivery for England’s opening goal. 7.

Kyle Walker: Did little to deter manager Gareth Southgate from persevering with him, out of position, in central defence. 7.

John Stones: Again largely composed in possession but often performed as though on the brink of an error. 6.

Gary Cahill: May have secured his starting place when he complemented an encouraging performance by heading England in front. 8. Ashley Young: Exposed by Tyronne Ebuehi’s pace during the second half which could damage his pursuit of a starting place. 6.

Eric Dier: Sent a header just wide at 2-1 when Nigeria were in the ascendancy. 6.

Dele Alli: Influence waned after a promising start and will need to produce more in Russia. 6.

Raheem Sterling: Wasted goalscoring chances but posed a consistent attacking threat and found Harry Kane for the second goal. 7. Jesse Lingard: Lively and unfortunate not to score when forcing Francis Uzoho into a diving save with his close-range effort midway through the first half. 7. Harry Kane: Played with confidence and intent and deserved the goal he scored shortly before half-time. 8. Substitutions: Ruben Loftus-Cheek (for Lingard, 67mins): Had too little time to influence an increasingly disjointed game. 5.

Danny Rose (for Young, 68mins): A more convincing option on the left than Young, who the former Sunderland loan star replaced. 6.

Danny Welbeck (for Kane, 73mins): The one-time Sunderland loanee was denied the chance to score England’s third goal after being tackled when nearly through on goal. 6. Marcus Rashford (for Sterling, 73mins): Needs to rediscover the belief and confidence that made him such an asset pre-Euro 2016. 5. Fabian Delph (for Alli, 82mins): Awarded his first England cap for 932 days, but unable to offer a significant contribution. 5.
