Ex-Cat Stubbs to take Jack’s old job
Former Sunderland defender Alan Stubbs is poised to replace Black Cats boss Jack Ross as manager of Ladbrokes Scottish Premiership new boys St Mirren.
Ross left the Buddies to take charge at Sunderland last month, having guided the Paisley club to the Championship title.
Stubbs, formerly in charge of Hibernian and Rotherham, has reportedly accepted an offer to take over the hot seat, getting the nod despite St Mirren also interviewing ex-Wigan boss Gary Caldwell, former Ross County manager Jim McIntyre and Coleraine chief Oran Kearney.
Stubbs, who memorably steered Hibs to a first Scottish Cup final win in 114 years at Hampden Park in 2016, has been out of management since October 2016, when his shortlived reign at Rotherham ended with the sack. Goncalo Guedes netted twice as Portugal beat Algeria 3-0 in a World Cup warmup friendly in Lisbon last night. Cristiano Ronaldo had a goal ruled out for offside, while Bruno Fernandes also netted. Iceland were pegged back for a 2-2 draw by Ghana after leading 2-0 with goals from Kari Arnason and Alfred Finnbogason.
Brazil midfielder Fred, close to sealing a £47million move to Manchester United, injured an ankle in training ahead of the World Cup.
Kayleigh Green kept Wales’ bid for Women’s World Cup qualification on track last night as she fired them to a 1-0 victory over Bosnia.
The win took unbeaten Wales a point clear of England at the top of Group 1 with the Lionesses in action against Russia tonight.
