At the moment members are planning an event, Sunshine Corner, at the Summer Streets festival which is being held at Seaburn Recreation Park on July 14. Wanabefite­lite, The Gym and Fitness studio, Beaumont Street, will be holding an open day fundraiser on Saturday from 11am to 2pm. Everyone is welcome. Children from Benedict Biscop Church of England Academy, Moorside, took part in a poetry competitio­n on the theme of the recent Royal Wedding between Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. There was an overwhelmi­ng response and the three winning entrants received certificat­es and vouchers. Blue Watch Youth Centre (BWYC), with funding from the East Area Committee, Sunderland Council, supported by local ward councillor­s, recently carried out one of its most successful litter-picks in St Michael’s ward, when over 50 volunteers collected a total of 41 bags of rubbish mainly from Queen Alexandra Road, Ryhope Road, plus areas of Westheath Avenue and cuts to Leechmere Road. BWYC considered it a really positive community clean-up session, with many of the young people having the opportunit­y to tidy the areas where they live. They also received some very positive comments from residents, some of whom came out of their houses to speak to the group and congratula­te them on their efforts. This enabled Blue Watch to explain the various projects it is delivering, and receiving support for, in St Michael’s ward. St Michael’s Residents’ Associatio­n meets tomorrow at Auckland Homes, Hill View Road, at 6.30pm. Among items on the agenda will be a talk from local Councillor, Peter Wood, entitled Port of Sunderland, 2018. Residents living in the ward are welcome. St Michael’s Councillor­s, Michael Dixon, Robert Oliver and Peter Wood, are holding their next ward surgery on Friday from 4pm to 5pm at the Community Centre, Stanningto­n Grove. Thornholme Residents’ Associatio­n will meet on Monday, July 2, at the Ashbrooke Sports Club, at 6pm. Sunderland Art Club meets in St Cecilia’s RC Church hall, Ryhope Road, every Friday from 9.30am to 12.30pm. New members with an interest in art are welcome. Sessions cost £2.40. Sunderland Symphony Orchestra holds it next concert on Saturday, July 7, at West Park Church, opposite the Park Lane Bus Interchang­e and Metro Station. The concert stars at 7.30pm. Sessions cost £1.50 with under ones free. There is no need to book just go along. Do you enjoy gardening and have few hours to spare? The project is currently looking for volunteers to help maintain of the community garden. Volunteers meet every Monday from 9.30am to noon. St Mary and St Peter’s Sunday School offers lots of fun, crafts, parties and all children are welcome. Adults welcome to accompany children. Starts at 9.30am every Sunday. A Healing Service takes place on the first Tuesday of the month at 6pm. Go along to St Mary and St Peter’s Church and enjoy a quiet service and receive prayers for healing. Open to all. Humbledon Methodist Church, Ettrick Grove, holds a number of weekly activities including: Mondays, MS Society, 10am to noon and Brownies, 6.30pm; Tuesdays Weight Watchers from 6pm; Wednesday Open Door from 11am to 1pm, when tea or coffee and toast also light lunches will be served; Thursdays Slimming World from 5pm to 7pm. On Saturday, Humbledon Methodist Church will be holding a Strawberry Tea in the church hall from 3pm. Tickets are £4 and available to buy now.
