The Wear Rivers Trust has been working with the Coastal Streams Partnershi­p, Environmen­t Agency and Northumbri­an Water, to protect the Wapping Burn, which runs through the Peterlee Business Park. They aim to create a thriving wildlife corridor in the heart of the Business Park. Steve Hudson, senior project officer, is keen to speak to local business people and community groups who can spare a little time to get involved. He said: “There is no need for a long-term commitment. Vice-principal of The Academy of Shotton Hll, Miss Hook, took a once in a lifetime trip to London to visit 10 Downing Street at the end of May. Miss Hook, alongside more than 100 other teachers from across the country, was invited to an evening reception, hosted by the Prime Minister and Secretary of State for Education. The evening was to celebrate their hard work, talent and commitment to giving every child an excellent education. Prime Minister Theresa May said: “We know that the success of every young person, in whatever they go on to do in life, is shaped by the education they receive at school. That’s why I was delighted to welcome over a hundred teachers from across the country to Downing Street to celebrate their achievemen­ts and to thank them for the vital work they do day-in and day-out. Teachers are key to making Britain the great meritocrac­y it can and should be, and I am committed to working with them so that every child has the best possible start in life.”

PCSO Ian Goodwin has presented the Bradley Lowery Foundation with a cheque for £347, the proceeds raised from a flower auction held at the Young Heroes event at Shotton Hall.

Congratula­tions to Sam Garraghan in Year 9 at St Bede’s, for successful­ly achieving a place on the Cleveland Under 14 Cricket squad. He is wished all the best for the season ahead.

Castle Eden Dene Volunteers Wednesday Working Group worked on three different tasks. Repairing fencing, behind the Wood Yard chipping brash to allow easier access to remove Himalayan Balsam later in the year and continued painting the metal fence at the entrance to the Dene. A lot of hard work from everyone and a lot achieved.

Durham Heritage Coast was making kites at Horden Heritage Centre in the holidays. Lots of colourful kites were then seen flying in Horden Welfare Park. Thank you to the heritage centre for allowing the use of its café to make the kites, everyone did a fab job. Some kites even managed to fly high over the park.
