A Sunderland teenager has returned to a city bridge to add more notes of support following an overwhelming response to her original gesture.

Paige Hunter attached 40 messages to the Wearmouth Bridge late last week, with the tags urging people to seek help and offering comfort to those facing difficulties.

Now the 18-year-old, from Plains Farm, has revisited the crossing to add another 20 notices to the display to back up her call and replace some which had come down.

The health and social care student, who is studying at East Durham College in Peterlee, said she had been delighted with the comments she had received after people heard about her efforts.

She said: “I went down on Sunday to put some more up and I’d had a text to say some had come down, but I saw there were still a lot up.

“I put up about another 20 with some different messages on and I’d had a message from someone who asked if I would put up a message for her.

“I loved how people have responded, honestly, it’s been lovely. It’s made it all worth it and I hope it makes a difference.”

Paige was moved to act after seeing people do something similar on the Tyne Bridge.

Echo readers have been among those to voice their support for Paige, after her Facebook post about her notes was shared more than 1,000 times.

Donna Fraser said: “What an amazing thing to do Paige. I’m sure it will help many.”

Colin Nelly Nelson added: “Seen these yesterday if it saves one life it was worth it.

“Well done young lady, you’re a shining star.”

Sarah Wallace wrote: “Saw these notes yesterday on this bridge I think it’s a great idea. Even if it saves one life then it’s a positive.

“Well done to everyone who has took part in this.”

Yvonne Mary Reynoldson added: “Hopefully people who are in despair will realise that there is help out there.”
