A look inside city’s new £4m student village
Work is well under way on a £4million student village which will provide accommodation for hundreds of learners.
The U Student Group is making the investment at its properties at The Forge, in Neville Road, Pallion.
Lauren Boak, accommodation manager for U Student, said: “As accommodation partner to Sunderland University we are committed to delivering the best possible accommodation at affordable rents, which is very important to students.
“This investment creates almost 200 brand new en-suite bedrooms, nearly 200 new premium rooms and six studio apartments, alongside refurbished standard bedrooms and enhanced facilities on site at our unique student village.”
A show flat was launched recently and photographs reveal the new standard of accommodation on site.
The Forge already has a laundry, convenience shop, student hub/social space on site for student residents, and a cinema room is being added.
Ms Boak added: “The university is investing heavily in academia and we must align ourselves with their plans for sustainable growth in recruitment.
“The university sector is highly competitive and good quality affordable accommodation plays a vital role in the decision-making process.
“The Silver Teaching Award and recent news about the Medical School demonstrate the progress the university is making to be competitive in the academic sector and remain a key economic driver for the city.
“Sunderland is a great place to live and study, and we have a role to play in delivering the best in class accommodation and onsite facilities at the most affordable rents we can.”
Phase one works will be delivered in time for arrivals in September, with phase two due for completion by September 2019.
