MP shows support for city’s women in wake of march

-

Sunderland Cental MP Julie Elliott has said she is doing everything she can to ensure the women of Sunderland feel safe after a march was held through the city’s streets in a call for support.

The Justice for the Women of Sunderland held a protest on Saturday as they seek more safety measures and urge women to look out for each other.

About 300 people joined the march from Mowbray Park to Keel Square, with the event prompted by four rape inquiries in the city.

Ms Elliott has said she was sad to have not been able to make the gathering, but has been working with its organiser Natasha Allan and asked her to read out a statement.

It said: “As a woman, a mother and a grandmother I understand the worries and concerns that we all feel for the safety of ourselves and our families.

“I believe that everyone has the right to feel safe when walking our streets in our communities.

“This is why I am committed to working with the police and members of our community and other agencies to see what avenues we can explore to ensure the safety of everyone.

“I am in regular contact with Tasha, and we will be meeting soon to discuss what ideas she and many of you have to improve street lighting and other resources in our communities.

“I am doing as much as I can to make sure that everyone in Sunderland feels safe, and is safe, in our city.

“This is still a great place with great people and a place I am very proud to represent and call home.”
