A Tall Ships volunteer has lived an astonishing life – and she described Sunderland as another great part of it.

Doctor Mimi T Kennedy, originally from Thailand, is a team leader for the ships on the Queen Elizabeth pier at the Port of Sunderland.

But that’s just a small part of an incredible CV, which also includes;

Playing the part of a DCI in an episode of Vera;

Having a role in an episode of TV programme Cold Feet;

Clinching a role in films such as Nativity Rock and Detective Pikachu;

Appearing in an online show about the World Cup;

Starring as an international player at basketball;

Doing the same at table tennis; Studying medical law; And now working with the crews of some of the biggest ships in port for The Tall Ships Sunderland.

She makes sure the crews have everything they need for a successful stay in Sunderland, and this is her third races after Blyth and Greenwich.

Part of her role, she added, was to “introduce them to Sunderland and show them what is best about the city”.

And what a city Sunderland is, said Mimi, who believes Wearside has a lot to shout about.

She described herself as “an adopted Geordie and Mackem”, especially as she is now living in Newcastle and studying in the region.

“I understand the Mackem accent and it is beautiful,” she said.

“People are really friendly here and they always make people feel welcome.

“There are a lot of things to do in this city and you should be very proud.

“What you need to do is get out and enjoy what you have. You can do so many things in Sunderland.”

Once Sunderland’s Tall Ships festival is over, Mimi’s will be just getting under way.

She has a place on the tall ship Skonnerten Jylland for its journey to Esbjerg.

Mimi said she believed in living life to the full and praised the Tall Ships Races for giving lots of other people the chance to do the same.
