Politician­s put their faith in national team for cup clash

MPs and council chiefs on Wearside are backing England to book a place in Sunday’s World Cup Final with victory over Croatia tonight.

Gareth Southgate’s young team, including Sunderland academy products Jordan Pickford and Jordan Henderson, from Washington and East Herrington respective­ly, will kick off tonight’s semifinal at 7pm in Moscow.

Should they win, it will be the first the time the Three Lions has reached a major tournament final since Alf Ramsey’s team won the World Cup in 1966.

Politician­s representi­ng Wearside constituen­cies spoke of their hopes for the team and also their pride at seeing players from Wearside lining up for the team.

Bridget Phillipson, who serves Houghton and Sunderland South, said: “I wish England the very best of luck in their match against Croatia.

“Like millions of others, I will be watching with fingers crossed, and hoping that they can make it to the final stage of the tournament.

“It has been wonderful to see the country come together during this World Cup, and it has been great that local lads Jordan Henderson and Jordan Pickford have played such an important role in helping the team reach the semi-finals.

“They have done us all proud.”

Her Sunderland Central colleague, MP Julie Elliott, said: “Good luck to the boys in Russia, especially the two of our own. The whole country is behind you. Do us proud!”

Washington and Sunderland West MP Sharon Hodgson said: “I know everyone in Washington and Sunderland will be as proud and excited as I am about the fantastic performanc­es by local lads Jordan Pickford and Jordan Henderson, along with that of the whole England team.

“I’m sure that everyone across the nation will be watching the match tomorrow, and willing our wonderful team on.

“Let’s bring it home in 2018!”

Grahame Morris MP, who represents Easington, said: “The competitio­n has been marvellous­ly uplifting and has brought the country together. I’m particular­ly proud of the North East contingent of the two Jordans, Henderson and Pickford, who have been outstandin­g and wish them every success.

“I’m also pleased that I drew England in the Parliament­ary sweepstake and will give my winnings to the East Durham Food Bank when we win.”

The round of 16 game with Colombia ended in a nerveshred­ding penalty shootout, with Washington-born goalkeeper Pickford becoming the hero after saving one effort.
