Evans setto sign

-

Reading midfielder George Evans’ move to Sunderland is edging closer.

Jack Ross is aiming to make the 23-year-old, who can also play in defence, his seventh signing of the summer.

Evans travelled to Austria with the Reading squad at the weekend for their preseason training camp, but he is expected on Wearside for a medical and for talks on personal terms.

He trained with Reading yesterday morning.

Sources close to Reading say the former Manchester City academy product was due to travel to Sunderland last night to complete the deal, with a medical possibly taking place to- day.

The two clubs agreed a sixfigure fee for the midfielder, who has a year left on his contract, over the weekend.

Should the deal be completed, Evans will provide extra quality in the Sunderland engine room.

The Black Cats are looking to add at least five new signings before the window closes with two strikers and two centre backs also on the wanted list.

Evans has fallen down the pecking order and is surplus to requirements at Reading under new boss Paul Clement after the arrival of midfield rival David Meyler.

Clement has already admitted he has too many midfielders on the books.

Evans sprung to prominence as a youngster at Manchester City when he made his debut for the club as a substitute against Sunderland in the Capital One Cup in 2015, becoming only the second City player to have represented every single age group of the Academy, right through to the first-team.

An England Under-19 international, he made 23 appearances in the Championship last season before losing his place once Clement took over from Jaap Stam.

H Elliot Embleton has been named in England’s U19 20man squad for the 2018 UEFA U19 Championship, with England looking to retain their title in Finland.

England start their tournament against Turkey in Seinajoki today (KO 4.30pm). England then face Ukraine on July 20 and France on July 23.
