CCTV caught out man who dumped tiles
A covert camera operation caught a fly-tipper dumping roof tiles in a Sunderland back lane from the back of a van.
Investigations officers in the city received reports about a large quantity of roofing tiles deposited in the rear lane of Mainsforth Terrace West, in Hendon, earlier this year.
As part of targeted work in the area by the Enforcement Team, the officers retrieved footage from a covert camera deployed in the street.
The footage showed a man leaving the roofing tiles from the rear of a vehicle.
He was interviewed formally and initially denied depositing the roofing tiles, but when shown the footage, he admitted to dumping the items.
As a result of the information provided, the officer was satisfied that an offence of depositing waste without authority had been committed.
The owner of the roofing company, for which the man works, was served with a fixed penalty notice of £350 for fly-tipping.
The man also admitted transporting waste in the course of his business and was asked to produce Waste Information Forms relating to the lawful disposal of all waste associated with his business for the last two years.
The business was unable to produce the relevant documentation and was therefore served with a further £300 Fixed Penalty Notice for failure to produce the forms and another £300 for failure to provide a relevant Waste Carrier Licence.
Councillor Michael Mordey, who serves Hendon ward, said: “I welcome the action taken by the council’s enforcement team in issuing these fines.
“It is totally unacceptable for someone to think they can drive into Hendon and dump their commercial waste like this.
“A lot of people are volunteering their time, doing litter picks and community clean-ups to help keep our community as clean as possible; so it is really annoying when ignorant people like this think they can just drive up and dump a load of tiles because they can’t be bothered or are too cheap to pay to dispose of their waste correctly.”
The latest incident comes as the Echo continues its Clean Streets campaign, which is calling on Wearsiders to be more careful with disposing of their rubbish and waste.
