Up, up and away as our school marks 50+1

- Story By Matthew Camm.

This summer marks the end of our first year as an academy and has encouraged us to reflect on the changes that have been made and what we have achieved.

First and foremost, in November 2017 we at Thornhill celebrated being open for 50 years in a number of ways including a balloon release, with six colours representing the original five houses and school as a whole.

The school has changed a lot over 50 years: we now have a new uniform, have cut down from five houses to three and, this year, we converted to academy status.

The current head teacher, Mr Redford told me about the first year as an academy, explaining that he is keen to maintain the school’s old traditions as well as shape new ones and look to the future.

Additionally, he expressed his desire to upkeep the school’s large curriculum, with options for students to study the arts, and a very large selection of extra-curricular activities.

This ethos demonstrates that the teachers have a shared vision of improvement, and want the best for their pupils in life as well as exams – and they push students to do their best in every field.

All in all, we at Thornhill Academy are looking into the future and preparing to keep up the hard work, fun times, and the school’s traditions as we celebrate being both 50 years and one year old!
