We’re ‘doing all’ to help the community

- Story by Cadence Boxall, Tracey Antila and Tally Mennear.

A huge part of our ethos here at Thornhill is to support our local and wider community, and we are often raising funds for carefully selected charities.

From shoe boxes at Christmas time to MacMillancoffeemorningstoourfirstnon-uniform day in over 20 years to raise funds for Children Need – we’ve done it all!

As part of our Harvest Festival celebrations each year, pupils are set the task of collecting as many food items as possible to be donated to the local food bank and to Age Concern.

This tradition has ran for over 20 years, and each year the generosity of our pupils and parents amazes us as we constantly break previous records.

Another long-standing Thornhill tradition is our annual sponsored walk, from Seaburn to South Shields, to raise funds for Cancer Research.

For over 30 years, pupils have dressed up and donated their time and efforts to support a charity close to many of our hearts.

Thisyear’sSportsReliefwasparticularlyspecial for us because we used the opportunity to support Sunderland teenager, Josh Waddell in his campaign to represent Great Britain in fencing in the 2020 Paralympics in Tokyo, Japan.

Josh suffers from cerebral palsy and spastic diplegia, and needs £30,000 to make this dream of competing in the event come true.

Our staff versus pupils dodgeball match and other sports activities raised £105.55.

His current total stands at £8,225.
