At their first meeting of the new year, which runs from July 1 with meetings held in Rainton Meadows Informatio­n Centre, outgoing president of the Inner Wheel Club, Rita Wood, was thanked for her leadership as she handed over the chain of office to new president Joyce Harling. Freda Dawson continued as secretary and Valerie Whitfield remains as treasurer. The club supports many worthy causes locally, nationally and internatio­nallyfromi­tsvaried programme of fundraisin­g events and production of knitted goods by members. Members of Chilton Moor WI enjoyed a wonderful Japanese Experience, thanks to their speaker Denise Howe. Lorna Parker, aDiamond Coach, hosted a tea party with her Weight Watcher members at her Houghton morning meeting. Lorna’s good friend and memberAndr­ea Graham was celebratin­g being cancer free for eight years and the fundraiser was held to mark the occasion. About £200 was raised for the charity Breast Cancer Care, which helped Andrea when she was going through her treatment. Andrea said: “This is a fantastic cause which helps people in so many ways. I will always be grateful to them” Lorna said: “The members brought cakes along and we had a great morning and members from my other classes have contribute­d to the money raised too. My Weight Watcher members are always so generous when I hold these events – no foods are off limits with Weight Watchers.” The Houghton meetings are held every Thursday in Kepier Hall, St Michael and All Angels’ Church at 9.45am and 5.30pm. All ages are welcome to go along and try a range of activities, including baby and toddler groups, karate, ju-jitsu, garden games with obstacle course, steel pan band, dance groups and keep fit sessions.
