St Benet’s boys sign off with five trophies

-

St Benet’s RC Primary School’s footballers have enjoyed their most successful season ever, winning five trophies out of a possible eight.

The Fulwell Road school won the Sunderland sevena-side league while remaining unbeaten, likewise in the nine-a-side championship, and won the league finals cup.

To top it off, St Benet’s picked up the Bishops Cup, a competition featuring all the Catholic primary schools in the Diocese of Hexham and Newcastle, with a total of 56 teams entered.

They also lost another two final, one on penalties, and suffered a narrow loss in a semi-final.

In all, they netted 140 goals over an astonishing campaign, with players from every position contributing. Even the keeper chipped in with a goal.

The success was built on their form at Year 5 level the previous season when some fantastic, one-touch football helped them lift the Peter Lightle Trophy in style.

Teacher and coach Andrew Jackson said: “I have had the privilege of seeing a very special group of children play this year

“At times, the standard of football has been breathtaking and then, on top of that, the children have all worked and given 100% when they never had the ball.

“I never once doubted this team’s commitment and they have really played together as a team. It’s been a long season, with ‘The Beast from the East’ hampering the fixture list, and success means more games.”

Head teacher Ann Blakey praised the side, hailing them as “a truly great team who have made everyone at St Benet’s so proud. Good luck to all the boys in their new school.”
