Experienced centre-back Glenn Loovens says he can’t wait to get started after becoming Sunderland’s seventh summer signing.

The 34-year-old has penned a two-year-deal and will add physicality to Jack Ross’s defence ahead of the big kick-off in League One two weeks today.

The Dutchman, who made more than 100 league appearances for Sheffield Wednesday before being released at the end of last season, is pleased to have been able to commit well before the season begins.

He told safc.com: “I’m very pleased. Sunderland is a big club with great support, so I can’t wait to get started.

“They phoned me a couple of weeks ago through my agent. We’ve been working on it ever since then.

“I’ve been on holiday in Italy and got the final phone call yesterday – I got on a plane so now I’m here.

“I’ve been training on my own, which is not the best thing for pre-season, so I can’t wait to get on the pitch and get involved.”

Sunderland manager Ross will be eager to add at least one more defender to his ranks, with Loovens set to compete for a place with ex-Hearts man Alim Ozturk and former Burton Albion defender Tom Flanagan.

Lamine Kone has not been part of the pre-season programme since making to say hello and showed me around the place. Of course I want to play a part for the club and his team.

“I’ve got lost already twice! The place looks really nice – I can’t get wait to started and get in the team, get as fit as possible.

“I’ve played here before, so I know the support is amazing. The more, the merrier.”

Loovens could potentially figure in today’s friendly against St Mirren, but may have to wait until next Friday’s final pre-season match at Middlesbrough to make his Black Cats bow.

He will bring vast knowledge and experience to what is still a fairly young squad – and the impact of that cannot be overstated.

Indeed, former Sheffield Wednesday team-mate Joey Pelupessy praised the Dutchman’s off-field impact – saying the team pick up on everything he says.

Ross is still busy trying to strengthen his forward line, a fortnight away from the league opener against Charlton.

Bids have been made for Bradford City’s Charlie Wyke and Cheltenham Town frontman Mo Eisa, though Sunderland could yet make more than two additions in that department.

They will also look to add a winger to their squad following the departure of Callum McManaman, who has rejoined Wigan.
