Jacob was chosen by his school as he likes a challenge and loves physical activities. He has recently been with the school skiing in Italy. Jacob is a 1st Dan Black Belt in Karate and training for his second Dan. Pictured with his family on the River Wear quayside about to board the largest three-masted schooner in the Dutch fleet, the “Eendracht”. Jacob was eagerly looking forward to his adventure and meeting his new shipmates. An enthusiast­ic group from St John’s Church Scout Group – young and old – participat­ed in a community clean-up in the streets immediatel­y surroundin­g the Ashbrooke church last week. The event was organised by Julie Bentley, from Groundwork­s NE, as part of the City Council’s East Area Cleaner Communitie­s programme, with St Michael’s ward councillor­s Robert Oliver and Peter Wood, joining-in the litter pick. Financed by the East Area committee of Sunderland council and supported by St Michael’s ward Councillor­s, Groundwork NE has organised a litter-pick in the streets close to the Park Lane interchang­e. Working closely with the Thornholme Residents’ Associatio­n and other local groups, this is the second year it will take place and arrangemen­ts are to meet outside the Ivy House Pub in Worcester Terrace at 6pm on Wednesday, August 8. Residents are welcome to join-in and equipment will be provided.

Sunderland Ladies’ Probus Club holds its next meeting at St John’s Church hall, Ashbrooke, this Thursday. Guest speaker will be Professor John Derry, who will be giving a talk entitled The Man Who Lost Three Kingdoms. As usual coffee will be served at 10am and the meeting commences at 10.30am. St Michael’s councillor­s, Michael Dixon, Robert Oliver and Peter Wood hold their next ward surgery tomorrow at St Cecilia’s Church hall, Ryhope Road, from 4pm to 5pm Funded by the East Area Committee of Sunderland Council and supported by St Michael’s Councillor­s, ICOS (Internatio­nal Community Organisati­on of Sunderland) is holding two community clean-ups in Backhouse Park. The first is on Saturday and the second, a week later, on Saturday, August 4. Both start at 9am and the meeting place is close to the Ryhope Road entrance to the park. Equipment will be provided for the litter-picks and local residents are invited to joinin where they will be made most welcome. For further details, contact Daniel on 0778343367­4 Ashmore Residents’ Associatio­n held its latest meeting at the British Legion Club, Grange Crescent, last week, with Liz Griffiths in the chair. Local residents were joined by St Michael’s ward Councillor­s, Michael Dixon and Peter Wood. Various issues were discussed including the latest police crime figures, litter, parking, bin removals and road markings. The next meeting, at the same venue, will be on Wednesday, September 12, at 7.30pm. Members of Sunderland Spirituali­st Church recently handed over a donation of dog food to Animal Krackers. Members make a donation to Animal Krackers twice a year. Church members collect food, blankets and toys
