£3m Schar set for Newcastle medical

-

Fabian Schar is set for a medical at Newcastle United – after the Magpies activated his £3m release clause.

Newcastle moved for the DeportivoLaCorunadefender after selling Chancel Mbemba to Porto for £7m.

And Schar – who went to the World Cup with Switzerland – is due to undergo a medical on Tyneside. Boss Rafa Benitez hope to complete the signing of Schar – who joined Depor from Hoffenheim last year – ahead of Saturday’s friendly away to Porto.

If he signs, Schar will join Martin Dubravka, Kenedy and Ki Sung-yeung as new arrivals.

Midfielder Ki made his debut off the bench in Tuesday’s 2-2 draw at Hull.

“I didn’t expect to play, but it was great to get 20 minutes, because I need to build my condition after my holidays,” said the ex-Sunderland loanee, who captained South Korea at the World Cup. “I don’t want to hurry with my condition because, if you aren’t ready, it doesn’t help the team. You have to be ready, but I’m all right now.” Newcastle midfielder Isaac Hayden says he must put his family first – and leave the Magpies, having asked for a transfer at the end of last season for “family reasons”.

Hayden said: “I let them know about the situation. I’ve done my bit for the club. I helped the club get promoted and stay in the Premier League last season. I just hope that they can find a solution to help me with my situation. If not, I’m a professional, so I’m going to do my job, but they know my stance. It’s not changed.”

Goalkeeper Matz Sels’ proposed move to Strasbourg could be finalised today.
