Bumper month for tourism

- By Richard Ord

And we’re off... again!

The 30th Sunderland International Airshow doesn’t often find itself playing second fiddle to anyone, but this year it has tough competition.

While the eyes will be in the sky for planes, they were all across the water for the Tall Ships Races earlier this month.

The Tall Ships brought in a million plus visitors and the airshow is expected to do the same over the next few days.

July could prove to be the biggest tourist draw of the century for Sunderland.

More than two million punters descending on Sunderland is a win win for Wearside.

While there are those who have had their reservations about the airshow and other big free events in the city, the impact they have on the local economy can not be understated.

It’s important to remember that tourists, according to the latest statistics, now bring an impressive £429million to the city every year. And the numbers are going up.

Visitor numbers are up 6%, revenue is up 5%, and tourism we’re told supports 5,300 jobs.

Obviously, it’s not just down to the Tall Ships and airshow, but these two events are the big guns of tourism for 2018.

The airshow is always (weather permitting) a big draw and this year’s line up looks to be one of the best yet.

What’s worth remembering though is that while our eyes are on the skies, there’s just as many eyes on Sunderland.

These high-profile events play a massive part in putting out city on the map.

We are in the shop window ... and on the evidence of this month - we’re looking great.
