No great view for homes

-

I feel I must once again pen another letter regarding the Penshaw greenbelt debate.

More posters have been put up around the area and also been put through our letter boxes stating that other greenbelt areas are mainly safe.

Yet although Penshaw greenbelt attracted the most signatures and objections it looks like the council has already signed on the dotted line.

The proposed development for land adjacent to Herrington Country Park, where 400 houses could be built, is overlooked by Penshaw Monument and the park is one of our most scenic spots and was recently awarded a national Green Flag Award but these plans could see these houses built right next to it spoiling the ambience of the area and probably losing said Green Flag Award.

The main road, ie Chester road, is already busy at several times of the day, and indeed cut off from the rest of Sunderland now and again. So we, the public will be stuck on the wrong side of the road as we watch a mounting line of road traffic stopping us from getting to the bus stop where a metaphorical chicken may be standing.

Moreover the people that may or may not buy these ‘prestigious’ houses cannot be over enamoured with the view of old pit houses but mainly huge electric pylons out of their front windows or perchance back windows whichever way the houses are facing.

The thought of having to look at ugly brick housing instead of the afore-mentioned greenbelt and assorted farm animals fills me with dismay.

And me, being a creature of habit will and others will, probably keep on depositing vegetable scraps and the like for the animals in the field by the bus stop onto some poor soul’s manicured front lawn perish the thought. Alan ‘The Quill’ Vincent, Old Penshaw
