Durham snatch final-over victory

-

Liam Trevaskis took three wickets in a brilliant last over as Durham snatched victory from the jaws of defeat against Lancashire at Emirates Old Trafford.

The part-time left-arm spinner defended just six off the last over and took his first wickets of the campaign as Lancashire chased a 155 target, slipping badly from a position of strength at halfway.

The Lightning needed 63 off the last 10 overs with six wickets left and finished on 150 for nine.

Trevaskis finished with 4-16 from his four overs in a four-run win which significantly strengthens their hopes of quarter-final qualification.

Trevaskis said: “It was good to come out on the winning side. It can go both ways in that situation.

“I’d bowled a touch full in the few overs I’d bowled, so I dragged my length back.

“We’re in a good position, and hopefully we can secure that spot and hit the quarter-finals.”

The second-placed Jets have moved to 14 points from 10 games, one behind leaders Worcestershire. Lancashire are fourth on eleven points from 10.

Earlier, Lancashire’s Afghanistan spinner Zahir Khan impressed with 2-19 on debut as their overseas player as Durham posted 154-7, a total which looked under par when Alex Davies flew out of the blocks in reply with 53 off 33 balls.

Khan has signed for the rest of the season on Jos Buttler’s recommendation having been squad mates at Rajasthan Royals in the IPL earlier this summer.

He finished with identical figures to fledgling seamer Danny Lamb, who was one of the three Lightning players to fall to Trevaskis in that dramatic conclusion.

Khan bowled flat and quick with variations aplenty, bowling Trevaskis around his legs as he tried to sweep and trapping Paul Collingwood lbw sweeping in an eye-catching fourover spell.

In the end, the Jets did well to get up to 154 as veteran Will Smith hit three sixes in 37 not out. Their innings included nine sixes and only six fours.
