Sunderland & District Mill View Over-40s League Penshaw Catholic Club gained revenge for last season’s defeat to Marden in the Austin Elliott Charity Cup final by beating the league champions 4-1 at Blue Flames Sports Club in this season’s annual curtain-raiser.

In the first half Penshaw’s Chris Moody was hauled down in the box and got up to convert the penalty to put Penshaw in the lead.

In the second half a great cross was converted with a close range header by Marden centre forward Steve Hart.

For the next 15 minutes Marden took control without troubling the excellent Penshaw defence but after Penshaw lost influential midfielder Digga Oliver with a dislocated shoulder it looked like Marden would take control.

Working a great onetwo with Moody, Oliver found space to the left of the Marden Box to deliver the cross of the match for Luke Charlesworth to put Penshaw 2-1 up.

Penshaw added two more goals with Moody getting a second and Brian Oliver capping a great substitute appearance with a bullet header at the back post.

In the Premier League, Heaton Stannington got the new season off to a disappointing start with a 6-0 home defeat to Washington Sky Lounge.

Washington however took the lead after half an hour when

Burns tucked in a pass from Andy Lumsden.

In the second half, Man of the match Steve Burns thumped home a second goal from 25 yards and then laid on two goals for strike partner Chris Dawson.

Substitute Paul Diamond then finished the scoring with two fine goals. In the Premier, Hartlepool WORKIES drew at home to Wearmouth Colliery 2-2.

They got off to a dream start though when Bob Smith scored inside two minutes.

Midway through the half Workies messed up a short free kick and

Wearmouth broke to gain a penalty which they scored to level things up.

Parkinson almost regained the lead before halftime when his effort beat the keeper but was cleared off the line.

Workies did go back in front with 15 minutes to play when Lee Crosby’s 25 yard free kick flew into the top corner.

But with time running out the visitors equalised in bizarre circumstances.

A player from each side went down in the box after a coming together and the Workies player picked up the ball thinking he’d been fouled.

But the referee hadn’t blown and was left with no option other than to award a penalty for handball.

Wearmouth scored from the spot kick to make it 2-2.

Hartlepool CATHOLIC CLUB started their Division Two campaign with a 3-2 home win over Milbourne Arms, a score that flattered the away side.

Catholic controlled the game for 70 minutes but injuries and positional changes led to them conceding two late goals.

Nipper McNeany headed them in front from a delightful Chris

Tierney cross, then Tierney scored from the spot after DixieChapmanwasupended.

Midway through the second half Davy Smith latched on to a through ball into the box and beat the keeper with a low finish.

Hartlepool STAG & MONKEY began life in Division Two with a 3-3 result at home to Plains Farm Alldec.

The visitors enjoyed the bulk of possession but the home side always looked a threat on the counter, and went in front on 20 minutes. Mark Dobson won the ball and slipped it through for Dave Cooling to shoot into the bottom corner.

Stag doubled their lead on the hour, Brendan Deer scoring from Cooling’s cushioned header, only for Plains to rally with two well-worked goals in the space of five minutes.

Stag thought they’d won it late in the game when Cooling found Chris Barlow and he calmly chipped the keeper.

However, in added on time, after stand-in keeper Nick Cain made a great double save, Plains bundled the ball in at the third attempt.

Newly promoted Sedgefield took the points on their visit to Houghton Cricket at Leyburn Grove, they took the lead midway through the first half, Houghton equalised courtesy of an own goal but Sedgefield went 2-1 up to lead at half time.

Two further goals from Sedgefield in the second half sealed the win, Michael Forster pulled one back to make it 4-2.

Sunderland Rolls Royce contributed to their own downfall against Peterlee Helford with poor defending for all goals, going 2-0 down in the space of two minutes, both from a corner.

Rolls got back into the game, just before half time, when Mick Atkinson was brought down in the box. Mick Agnew coolly put away the spot kick.

Peterlee went 3-1 ahead when their attacker got a lucky ricochet on a poor defensive clearance, which ended up in the net.

Rolls never gave up and Wayne Browell scored a great

individual goal to make it 3-2. Agnew was the star man for Rolls.

In Division One, RABY ARMS produced an amazing comeback at home to Consett to win 4-3, after being 3-0 down well into the second half.

The fight back started and within 20 minutes they were in

front, with Derek Draper pulling the strings and Tony Hood putting some quality balls into the box.

Nicky Lloyd started things off, blasting the ball home from a corner, and James Tummilty headed in another corner to make it two. Lloyd levelled the game at 3-3, heading in a cross, and Kenny Weighill got the winner.
