CASTLE HAVE HOPE IN OPENING 12-GOAL TIE

SUNDERLAND SUNDAY LEAGUE: PLENTY OF GOALS AND THRILLS AS SEASON STARTS AGAIN

Hylton Castle and Farra Vics played out a 12-goal thriller as the Premier Division season kicked-off last weekend.

Callum Hope returned to haunt his former club as he netted five for Hylton Castle, with Luke Bell also finding the net. Devlin (2), Rowe, Taylor, Steel and Bewick provided the goals for Farra in an entertaini­ng clash.

Silksworth CW’s new-look side began the season in fine form courtesy of an emphatic 4-0 victory over RCA Grangetown Florists. Danny Austin’s brace was added to by Elliott Tench and Harry Munday to seal victory for Silksworth despite the Florists’ spirited attempt at a comeback.

Elsewhere, Alan Tench’s hat-trick earned Redhouse Last Orders a win on their Premier League debut as they brushed aside New Town. Salichi managed to pull one back for the hosts, but Tench’s deadly display saw Redhouse claim a 3-1 victory.

Southwick FC also began the season with a win as they beat Ryhope Forresters. Liam Laidler stole the show with a brace, while a long-range rocket from Kane put some gloss on a 3-0 win.

There was also an opening day victory for Sunderland Railway Club, but they had to work hard to secure the three points against a youthful Landsdowne side. Shaun Smith won and then converted a penalty to hand Landsdowne the lead, only for late strikes from Tough and Wallace to claim victory for the Railway Club.

Meanwhile, the First Division saw goals galore on opening day with 43 goals netted in just six games.

The best entertainm­ent was to be found at Ashbrooke Hendon, where visitors Herrington CW ran out 8-2 winners. Lewis Herron put in a standout performanc­e as he netted a hat-trick for Herrington in a dominant display. Glendennin­g, Cook, McMann and an own goal took the tally up to eight, with McIntyre and Imeson’s strikers for the hosts.

Grange Park picked up where they left off last season with a 6-1 triumph over the Saltgrass. Dobinson and Drydal both netted hat-tricks, with the latter impressing on his debut after joining Grange Park over the summer. Robson netted a reply for the Saltgrass, but it proved only a consolatio­n for the visitors.

Another 6-1 win was found at The Stackyard as they brushed aside the Stella. The win was in thanks part to Connor Gales, who netted a hattrick in a confident display from the hosts. McCabe, Fairley and Ayre also netted for The Stackyard, with Dan Emery finding the net for the visitors.

Washington Sky Lounge and Thorney Close Inn played out a 3-3 draw, with McCartney netting a double for the hosts. Blekinsop also converted for Washington while strikes from Steel, Robson and Dunn ensured that the visitors took a share of the spoils.

A similar scoreline was seen down the road at Washington Teal Farm, where the hosts and Pennywell Comrades shared out six goals. Snowdon netted twice to hand Pennywell the lead before goals from Dixon, Thompson and Cuthbertso­n saw Washington take the initiative. But there was to be one final twist, as GunterHead nodded home to salvage a point.

Port of Call picked up an away win courtesy of a 4-3 victory at Wearmouth CW. Liam Houghton was the standout for Port of Call as he netted a treble, before the hosts fought back.

Craig Williams’ brace and Robbie Ronson’s effort looked to have sealed Wearmouth a point, only for Sam Whigham to come off the bench and net the winner for the visitors.

Similar entertainm­ent was found in the Second Division where the pick of the viewing was to be found at Redhouse, where a new-look side registered a 5-3 victory over Myers. Fletcher netted a double to put the hosts in command early on with Callaghan, Tench and Simpson also netting.

Myers put up a strong fight, but goals from Smith, Richardson and Thompson proved to no avail.

The Board Inn also clocked up three points courtesy of a 5-3 win, this time against Washington New Tavern. Drury and Thompson both claimed braces while the long-serving Steven Trotter added a fifth. Washington’s replies came from Mason, Oliver and Roberts.

Elsewhere in the third tier, strikers from Benson and Southern handed Park View victory over 10-man The Grange; Kings Arms brushed aside Ryhope CW and picked up a 3-1 win thanks to goals from Tunstall, Tasker and Barrass; Rhyope FC saw Mark and Adam Wasey both find the net in a 3-1 win over Washington Athletic; and Queen Vic kickedoff the season with a dominant 6-0 win over The Victory Club.
