Double swoop as Shields sign keeper and ex-Rangers star

-

South Shields have completed a double swoop for goalkeeper Brendan Pearson and midfielder Ursene Mouanda.

The duo were signed in time for today’s Evo-Stik Premier Division opener against Witton Albion.

Ex-Newcastle United under-23 goalkeeper Pearson – released by the Magpies this summer – will battle Liam Connell for the No 1 jersey as he looks to kickstart his career after injuries.

“At a lot of clubs, you always have that No 1 and they don’t really have that person to push them,” said the 21-year-old.

“It’s good that Liam and I will be able to battle it out, and we get on really well too, so it’s not a complete rivalry. It’s good to have that competition.

“I haven’t played a lot of football over the last few years, mainly because of injuries, and the opportunity came around to come here in pre-season and I couldn’t say no to it.”

Shields, meanwhile, also received international clearance to sign Ivorian midfielder Mouanda after he impressed on trial at the club this summer.

The 20-year-old has worked with Shields management duo Lee Picton and Graham Fenton in the past, having been guided by the duo during his time at Monkseaton Football Academy.

His exploits there earned him a move to Scottish giants Rangers, and he spent last season at another Scottish Premiership side, Kilmarnock.

Fenton said: “We’re delighted to have secured Ursene on a long-term contract.

“When Ursene became available, we had no doubt he was the right type of player and character to bring into the first-team squad. He gives us a lot of things, including fantastic athleticism and competitiveness.”
