Another feather in the cap...

- By Richard Ord

Sunderland’s tourism chiefs are gathering some fabulous new feathers in their caps.

After the success of the Tall Ships and Airshow events, it’s two new structures that are set to draw the crowds to our community. As we reveal today, the date has been set for the opening of the Northern Spire bridge.

While there have been some small dissenting voices in the past, the city is set to open what will be an impressive new addition to the tourism trail.

The original ‘iconic bridge’ design, of course, would have been a real showstopper. When the full cost of this design was revealed, however, prudence prevailed.

The Northern Spire, while not in the same aesthetic league as the iconic design, is still going to be some sight to behold.

Let’s not forget it is the tallest structure in the North East, making it not only a great addition to the city’s transport infrastructure, but a record breaker and, as such, a great plus for our city.

The bridge will finally open August 28, but even before that date, tourism chiefs are rightly proud of another structure making the headlines.

Roker Pier has just undergone an impressive renovation and within weeks it has been voted one of the top 10 piers in the world.

We knew it was good, but just how good can be judged by the impressive international company it now keeps. Councillor Graeme Millar hit the nail on the head when he said: “We always knew it was one of the best but it’s brilliant to see it right up there with some of the most beautiful piers in the world.”

With so many new feathers in its cap, it’s little wonder Sunderland tourism is flying high.
