New face heaving to at Port of Tyne

A fresh face has dropped anchor at the Port of Tyne.

The port has welcomed a new non-executive director to its board in the form of Mike Comerford.

With more than 30 years of experience in shipping, maritime safety and engineerin­g, Mike Comerford is a chartered engineer (C. Eng), a Member of the Royal Institutio­n of Naval Architects (MRINA) and an Associate Fellow of the Nautical Institute (AFNI).

He brings a wealth of expertise to his new role with Port of Tyne, having held a variety of previous high-profile senior positions within such organisati­ons as the Maritime and Coastguard Agency, Lloyd’s Register and Bureau Veritas.

Mike is relishing the prospect of getting to grips with his new role.

“I am really pleased to be joining the Port of Tyne at an exciting time for the future of the maritime sector,” he commented.

“I hope my years of experience in every aspect of maritime activity will be an asset to the board.”

Mike is also a non-executive director of David MacBrayne Limited.

The firm is one of the largest ferry operating groups in Scotland, transporti­ng five million passengers annually and operating across 25 harbours throughout the country.

Lucy Armstrong, chair of the Port of Tyne, said the arrival would be a valuable addition to the port’s management.

“His wide ranging experience will further strengthen the team.”
