Burnmoor take runners-up spot as weather hits

-

Burnmoor needed just three points to finish second and it’s exactly what they did at home to Willington.

They were on 82-5 when the rain meant the game was abandoned.

Sunderland entertained Boldon at Ashbrooke and batted first, totaling a decent score of 201-4.

Skipper Greg Applegarth led the way with 87 and Chris Youldon added a fine 59, to set their opponents a difficult run chase.

Boldon in reply, never got going and lost early wickets, slumping to 67-5, when bad light stopped play and the home side had to settle for a ‘winning draw’ and complete their season in fifth position, while Boldon ended up third bottom.

South Shields managed to avoid finishing bottom after their match at basement club Blaydon, fell to the weather with Shields on 36-2.

Champions Burnopfield travelled to Brandon and the home team were 72-1, thanks to 37 not out from Chris Peareth, when the rain washed out play.

In the only game to be completed in Division One, Washington lost at home to Gateshead Fell by eight wickets.

The home side only managed to score 140 all out, with Josh Wilson scoring exactly half of those runs with 70.

On the bowling front, Chris Taylor took 3-36, while Jonathan Roseby claimed 3-44.

Robert Stacey and Malik Javed then put on 102 together for the second wicket, as Stacey scored 48 and Javed 71 not out, for a comfortable win. Castle Eden finished third. Crook, Shotley Bridge and Ashington, will be in the NEPL First Division next season, following yesterday’s results.
